Therapy: What is it and what does it mean to you?


Think about how you feel when you see, hear, or talk about therapy. When you see that word, what do you think of? Do you automatically get nervous, or does it make you feel calm? Does it have a positive meaning or a negative one?

No matter your response to those questions, I can guarantee that you had some reaction to seeing the word therapy.

Because we live in a society where mental health is, sadly, still somewhat of a taboo subject, many people have a negative opinion of therapy or are apprehensive of therapy. But, why?

According to a study by Nursel Topkaya, a researcher at Ondokuz Mayis University, many things factor into a person’s willingness to seek therapy, including:

  • Social stigma

  • Apprehension to share your problems with an unfamiliar person

  • The belief that struggles with mental health should stay private

  • Not knowing enough about psychological services

  • The idea that someone can solve their problems without intervention.


However, despite the hesitations that society pushes on many people, 41.4 million people in the U.S. chose to actively seek out some form of mental health treatment in 2020, indicating a definite need within the general population.


But, what exactly is therapy?


According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary definition, therapy is the “medical treatment, impairment, injury, disease, or disorder.” Also commonly referred to as psychotherapy, talk therapy, or one of the other various forms of therapeutic service, it is a way to help mitigate problems that people experience with their mental health. Some reasons that people choose to seek therapy are that they are:

  • struggling with harmful thoughts,

  • experiencing stress,

  • going through a life change,

  • having trouble coping,

  • struggling with substance abuse,

  • feeling isolated, withdrawn, or alone,

  • or having significant problems with their mental health.

In addition to the multiple reasons people seek therapy, there’s also more than one way to go to therapy. It does not only have to be something that you go to sit in an office or talk to someone over a computer screen for — nor does it have to be something sterile, clinical, or boring. In addition to the traditional methods, therapy can be the little things in your life that bring you joy. It can be having a cup of hot coffee, speaking to an old friend, or taking some time to walk in the park; even the most menial of events can be therapeutic to the mind.
