Couple holding hands during relationship counseling in Kentucky

Every relationship faces challenges, but with the right support, couples can move through them instead of getting stuck. Kentucky Services offers relationship counseling for partners at every stage: dating, engaged, and married.

Who Relationship Counseling Is For

  • Dating couples wanting to build healthy communication habits early, before patterns become harder to change
  • Engaged couples preparing for marriage through premarital counseling
  • Married couples working through conflict, trust issues, or a rough patch that's lasted longer than either of you expected
  • Couples navigating major life changes, like a new baby, relocation, job loss, or blended family

Common Reasons Couples Reach Out

  • Communication that turns into the same argument on repeat
  • Feeling more like roommates than partners
  • Rebuilding trust after a breach
  • Different expectations around money, parenting, or family
  • Wanting a stronger start before making a lasting commitment

The Gottman Method

Several of our clinicians are trained in the Gottman Method, a research-backed approach to relationship counseling built on decades of studying what actually makes relationships work. It gives couples practical tools for improving communication, managing conflict, and building lasting intimacy, rather than generic advice.

The Prepare/Enrich Assessment

For couples who want a structured starting point, we offer the Prepare/Enrich Assessment, an evidence-based tool used by over 100,000 facilitators nationwide. It helps you and your partner understand your relationship dynamics, identify strengths and growth areas, and build a stronger foundation.

  • Full Assessment Package: $350, including the assessment and three appointments to review results
  • Assessment Only: $35 per person, as an addition to ongoing couples counseling
  • Insurance: The assessment itself is not covered by insurance, but related appointments may be

What a Typical First Session Looks Like

Your first session is about understanding where things stand: your history as a couple, what brought you in, and what you each want out of counseling. From there, your therapist builds a plan tailored to your specific goals, whether that's working through a defined conflict, rebuilding trust, or strengthening a relationship that's already solid but could use a tune-up.

What If Only One of Us Wants to Go?

It happens more than you'd think. Some clients start with a few individual sessions to sort out their own thoughts before bringing a partner in. Others find that once one partner starts seeing real value in therapy, the other becomes more open to joining. Talk to our scheduling team about what makes sense for your situation.

Beyond the Prepare/Enrich pricing above, standard couples sessions follow the same private pay scale as our other counseling services: $90 with a fully licensed clinician, $70 with an associate, or $50 with a supervised intern. Kentucky Medicaid and most commercial plans are also accepted. See our Investment & Insurance page for the full picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is couples counseling only for married couples?
No. We work with dating, engaged, and married couples at every stage of a relationship.
Does insurance cover couples counseling?
Kentucky Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans cover couples counseling sessions. The Prepare/Enrich assessment itself is not covered by insurance, though related appointments may be.
What is premarital counseling, and do we need it?
Premarital counseling uses tools like the Prepare/Enrich assessment to help engaged couples build communication skills and address potential challenges before marriage. It's not required, but many couples find it strengthens their relationship going into a lasting commitment.
How is the Gottman Method different from general couples counseling?
The Gottman Method is a specific, research-backed framework with structured tools and exercises, rather than open-ended conversation alone. Ask your therapist if this approach is a good fit for you.
How many sessions do most couples need?
It varies widely depending on what you're working through. Some couples come for a handful of sessions around a specific issue, others meet regularly for months. Your therapist will talk through expectations with you early on.
Can we do couples counseling by telehealth?
Yes. Online sessions are available for couples anywhere in Kentucky.
What if we've tried couples counseling before and it didn't help?
A different therapist or a different approach can make a real difference. Tell us what didn't work last time, and we'll help match you with a clinician suited to your situation.
